Apple has officially announced via a press release that over 15 billion downloads were made on the App Store since its launch in July 2008. The catalog now has over 425 000 applications including 100 000 optimized for the display of the iPad.
Philip Schiller, vice president in charge of worldwide marketing for Apple, also not forget to thank the developers, without whom the success of the App Store would not have been possible:
In just three years, the revolutionary App Store has become the marketplace for software the most exciting and popular the world has ever known. Thank you to all our talented developers who offer over 425,000 fantastic apps as well as some 200 million users iOS that exceeded 15 billion downloads.
So we learn in passing that the machinery iOS mobile (iPhone, iPod touch and iPad combined) amounts to 200 million units, as many potential customers for developers. By comparison, Sony sold 53 million PlayStation 3 in the world since November 2006, and Microsoft, 55 million units since November 2005 and Nintendo, 86 million consoles since 2006.
It is ultimately the Nintendo DS that is closest to the park with 147 million handheld Nintendo outstanding, twice as much as the Sony PSP.
