Carrier IQ: All Information You Want to Know

To make thing easier and in one single string, I decide to sum it up in one post with all statement from all of mobile phone carriers and U.S. carriers. All information about Carrier IQ running on mobile phone is in this single post. You can follow the information below.  Carrier IQ on HTC

First it started with the video posted on YouTube, by developer Trevor Eckhart. You can watch the video below:

Later there is a statement release by Carrier IQ:

Carrier IQ delivers Mobile Intelligence on the performance of mobile devices and networks to assist operators and device manufacturers in delivering high quality products and services to their customers. We do this by counting and measuring operational information in mobile devices – feature phones, smartphones and tablets. This information is used by our customers as a mission critical tool to improve the quality of the network, understand device issues and ultimately improve the user experience. Our software is embedded by device manufacturers along with other diagnostic tools and software prior to shipment.

While we look at many aspects of a device’s performance, we are counting and summarizing performance, not recording keystrokes or providing tracking tools. The metrics and tools we derive are not designed to deliver such information, nor do we have any intention of developing such tools. The information gathered by Carrier IQ is done so for the exclusive use of that customer, and Carrier IQ does not sell personal subscriber information to 3rd parties. The information derived from devices is encrypted and secured within our customer’s network or in our audited and customer-approved facilities.

Our customers have stringent policies and obligations on data collection and retention. Each customer is different and our technology is customized to their exacting needs and legal requirements. Carrier IQ enables a measurable impact on improving the quality and experience of our customers’ mobile networks and devices. Our business model and technology aligns exclusively with this goal.

Apple soon accepted that they have installed Carrier IQ on iPhone but dropped with the release of iOS 5 and willing to eliminate them all for the future iPhone. Here is the statement:

We stopped supporting Carrier IQ with iOS 5 in most of our products and will remove it completely in a future software update. With any diagnostic data sent to Apple, customers must actively opt-in to share this information, and if they do, the data is sent in an anonymous and encrypted form and does not include any personal information. We never recorded keystrokes, messages or any other personal information for diagnostic data and have no plans to ever do so.

HTC’s statement about Carrier IQ also stated that it has installed Carrier IQ but it is the requirement of carriers:

Carrier IQ is required on devices by a number of U.S carriers so if consumers or media have any questions about the practices relating to, or data collected by, Carrier IQ we’d advise them to contact their carrier.

It is important to note that HTC is not a customer or partner of Carrier IQ and does not receive data from the application, the company, or carriers that partner with Carrier IQ. HTC is investigating the option to allow consumers to opt-out of data collection by the Carrier IQ application.

RIM also stated the position from Carrier IQ too:

RIM is aware of a recent claim by a security researcher that an application called “CarrierIQ” is installed on mobile devices from multiple vendors without the knowledge or consent of the device users. RIM does not pre-install the CarrierIQ app on BlackBerry smartphones or authorize its carrier partners to install the CarrierIQ app before sales or distribution. RIM also did not develop or commission the development of the CarrierIQ application, and has no involvement in the testing, promotion, or distribution of the app. RIM will continue to investigate reports and speculation related to CarrierIQ.

Samsung is not different from HTC that the carrier require the companies to install Carrier IQ on their phone and you can see that some of Samsung phone in U.S. has Carrier IQ while not in other countries.

Nokia explained that non of their phones has Carrier IQ installed:

CarrierIQ does not ship products for any Nokia devices.

Google also sent out the statement:

We do not have an affiliation with CarrierIQ. Android is an open source effort and we do not control how carriers or OEMs customize their devices.

HP has just released the statement defend that no Carrier IQ on their devices:

HP does not install nor authorize its partners to embed Carrier IQ on its webOS devices.

T-Mobile turns to release a statement about installation of Carrier IQ:

“T-Mobile utilizes the Carrier IQ diagnostic tool to troubleshoot device and network performance with the goal of enhancing network reliability and our customers’  experience . T-Mobile does not use this diagnostic tool to obtain the content of text, email or voice messages, or the specific destinations of a customers’ internet activity, nor is the tool used for marketing purposes.”

Verizon statement:

We did recently notify customers about new privacy programs; we were transparent about how customer information will be used and gave clear choices to customers about whether they want to participate in these programs. Carrier IQ is not involved in these programs.

AT&T stated about Carrier IQ:

We’re really not going to offer more detail than what’s in the statement

Sprint also said:

We collect enough information to understand the customer experience with devices on our network and how to address any connection problems, but we do not and cannot look at the contents of messages, photos, videos, etc., using this tool. The information collected is not sold and we don’t provide a direct feed of this data to anyone outside of Sprint.

At this point, we can see that Apple, HTC and Samsung have shown in the statement that they have installed the Carrier IQ but they are willing to drop the service and offer user options or update to stop Carrier IQ. With this position, seem like the carriers seem to be in trouble.
