After the auditing by Data Protection Commission in Ireland, Facebook has decided to totally turn of facial recognition system for European Union. Now the service is no longer and blocked. If you preferred to upload your pictures on Facebook and received auto tagging on any photo with this service, now it won’t happen again and Facebook also clears the previous photo tagging for existing users starting from October 15th.
Now Facebook is working with DPC to relaunching similar service in the future but with better control. Facebok still has many more service to be reviewed by the commission before releasing the final report and now both are working together in a very satisfactory way.
Here is the statement from Facebook:
As our regulator in Europe, the Irish Office of the Data Protection Commissioner is constantly working with us to ensure that we keep improving on the high standards of control that we have built into our existing tools. This audit is part of an ongoing process of oversight, and we are pleased that, as the Data Protection Commissioner said, the latest announcement is confirmation that we are not only compliant with European data protection law but we have gone beyond some of their initial recommendations and are fully committed to best practice in data protection compliance.
